MONROVIA: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, has met with the President of Guinea, Mamadi Doumbouya, as part of ongoing high-level regional parliamentary leadership and diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation among West African states.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives, signed by Robert Benjamin Haynes Director of Press and Public Affairs Bureau of the House of Representatives, the meeting formed part of Speaker Koonโ€™s official engagements in Conakry, where he joined other regional parliamentary leaders, including Speakers of the Parliaments of Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire, in discussions focused on regional cooperation, parliamentary diplomacy, peace, security, and development.

The statement said during the engagement, Speaker Koon highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations among countries of the Mano River Union (MRU), particularly as efforts advance to institutionalize parliamentary cooperation within the sub-region.

He encouraged President Doumbouya to regard the President of Liberia, Joseph N. Boakai as an elder brother and to work together with him in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation to preserve peace and strengthen relations between the two neighboring countries.

The statement noted that, the establishment of the Mano River Union Parliamentary body provides an important platform for lawmakers from member states to deepen legislative cooperation, promote the exchange of experiences, and collectively address issues affecting the people of the sub-region.

Speaker Koon emphasized that stronger parliamentary relations can complement diplomatic and governmental efforts by creating opportunities for lawmakers to collaborate on common priorities, including regional integration, trade, infrastructure, peace and security, and sustainable development.

He stressed the importance of maintaining close relations among Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire, noting that the countries share historical, geographical, economic, and cultural ties that make regional cooperation essential to their collective progress.

The Liberian Speaker further underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in building trust and advancing common interests, saying that legislators have a responsibility to use their institutions to promote dialogue and strengthen relations among neighboring countries.

The meeting with the Guinean President was also attended by senior parliamentary leaders from across the region, underscoring the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting regional integration and cooperation.

Speaker Koonโ€™s participation in the engagement is part of his broader official visit to Guinea for the 2026โ€“2027 Parliamentary Opening Session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Guinea, where he has been engaging Guinean authorities and regional parliamentary counterparts on matters of mutual interest.

The Speaker reaffirmed Liberiaโ€™s commitment to working with neighboring countries and regional parliamentary institutions to promote peace, democratic governance, economic integration, and improved cooperation for the benefit of citizens across West Africa.
