PUL Marks 62 Years - Puts Media Power At Center of Democracy

MONROVIA: The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) will mark 62 years with a major celebration focused on strengthening independent journalism, protecting press freedom and empowering media to drive accountability and development.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the PUL will celebrate its 62nd anniversary with a major national gathering designed to place independent journalism at the center of Liberia’s democratic and development agenda.
The anniversary, being observed under the theme “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development,” will bring together journalists, media practitioners, civil society representatives, journalism students, government officials, diplomats and private-sector stakeholders.
The celebration is expected to combine reflection on the Union’s six decades of advocacy with a forward-looking conversation about the future of journalism, press freedom and the media’s role in strengthening democratic governance in Liberia.
According to the PUL, the anniversary will open with a grand parade through Monrovia before transitioning into an indoor program featuring motivational speeches and a high-level panel discussion examining how independent media can be strengthened to advance democracy, accountability and sustainable development.
The Union says, the anniversary represents more than a ceremonial milestone, adding that, it is an opportunity to reaffirm its longstanding commitment to defending journalists’ rights, protecting freedom of speech and expression and promoting ethical and responsible journalism.
For more than six decades, the PUL has positioned itself as a leading professional body representing Liberia’s journalists and advocating for a media environment in which journalists can work without undue interference while adhering to professional and ethical standards.
The anniversary theme reflects what the Union describes as the growing need for an empowered, independent and professionally responsible media capable of holding public institutions accountable and giving citizens access to credible information.
A major feature of this year’s observance will be the release of a report by the National Media Council of Liberia, documenting cases investigated involving alleged ethical breaches, press freedom infringements and challenges to freedom of speech and expression.
The report is expected to add an important accountability dimension to the anniversary, placing professional ethics alongside the broader campaign for press freedom.
The PUL’s decision to highlight both media rights and journalistic responsibility underscores the delicate balance between protecting freedom of expression and ensuring that the profession maintains credible ethical standards.
The anniversary also comes as the Union intensifies efforts to construct its National Headquarters, which it envisions as a permanent institutional home for press freedom advocacy, professional development, ethical journalism and the protection of journalists.
The proposed headquarters is expected to provide the Union with a stronger institutional foundation while creating additional opportunities for training, professional engagement and media development.
The PUL said, approximately 150 participants are expected to attend the anniversary activities, representing a cross-section of Liberia’s media and broader national community.
Participants will include journalists, media practitioners, civil society actors, journalism students and representatives of government, diplomatic missions and the private sector.
The Union is also using the anniversary to encourage journalists and media practitioners across Liberia to participate in the celebration, describing the event as an opportunity for professional learning, networking, dialogue and renewed solidarity within the media community.
PUL members are expected to use the gathering to exchange experiences and perspectives on the challenges facing journalism while learning from experts drawn from several sectors.
The Union said, souvenir T-shirts and caps are available at its headquarters on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, at a minimum cost, with items also being distributed to journalists and media practitioners across the country.
The full itinerary for the anniversary will be released on Monday, today, September 28, including the names of motivational speakers and distinguished panelists expected to participate in the program.
The speakers and panelists will reportedly come from the fields of international development finance and investment, diplomacy, law, government and the media.
As Liberia continues to confront questions surrounding governance, accountability, public trust and access to reliable information, the PUL says, the 62nd anniversary provides an opportunity to examine how the country’s media can become even more effective in informing citizens and strengthening democratic institutions.
The Union, has therefore, called on journalists, communication practitioners and members of the public to participate in what it describes as a landmark celebration.
For PUL members, attendance is also an important requirement for remaining in good standing, while providing an opportunity to step away from the daily demands of reporting and collectively reflect on the profession’s responsibilities and future.
After 62 years of advocacy, the Union says, its next chapter must be defined not only by defending press freedom, but by building a stronger, more ethical and more influential Liberian media capable of contributing meaningfully to democracy and sustainable national development.
