Boakai Unveils 60-Vehicle NTA Fleet - Public Transport Revitalization Begins

MONROVIA: The Boakai-Koung Administration is set to commission a fleet of 60 newly acquired vehicles for the National Transit Authority (NTA) on Friday, signaling a major step toward restoring Liberia's struggling public transportation system and expanding access to safe, reliable and affordable transit services nationwide.
The announcement was made Tuesday, August 4, during the Ministry of Information's regular press briefing, where Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah described the acquisition as a key milestone in the government's broader agenda to modernize public transport and rebuild critical state-owned institutions.
According to minister Piah, the newly procured fleet comprises 20 mini-buses, five cargo trucks and several other operational vehicles intended to strengthen the NTA's capacity to provide efficient transportation services across the country.
He said, the investment reflects President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's commitment to improving mobility for ordinary Liberians while repositioning the NTA as a dependable public service institution.
Minister Piah noted that the current administration inherited an NTA in a severely weakened state, with only five buses available when it assumed office, all of which were reportedly out of service.
"The acquisition of these vehicles demonstrates the government's determination to restore the National Transit Authority and provide Liberians with a modern, efficient and dependable public transportation system," Piah said.
The commissioning ceremony is scheduled to take place Friday at the NTA headquarters along the Japanese Freeway. Senior government officials, development partners and invited guests are expected to witness the formal unveiling of the new fleet.
Authorities believe the additional vehicles will significantly improve the NTA's operational capacity, increase passenger transport services, support logistics operations and help reduce transportation challenges confronting commuters in Monrovia and other parts of the country.
The initiative also forms part of the administration's broader infrastructure and public service delivery agenda aimed at enhancing mobility, improving access to economic opportunities and strengthening government institutions responsible for essential public services.
With the arrival of the new fleet, the government hopes to restore public confidence in the National Transit Authority and lay the foundation for a more efficient, accessible and sustainable public transportation network capable of meeting the growing demands of Liberia's urban and rural populations.
