Weah Somersaults On 2029 Presidential Polls -As He Electrifies Presidential Race

PHILADELPHIA/ MONROVIA: In January 2024, Liberia’s former President, George Manneh Weah, declared that when elections are held six years from now, he will not be running for president in 2029.
Speaking then, at his Forkay Kloh Jlaleh Family Fellowship Church, former President Weah announced at that time, he will not contest the presidency in 2029, indicating that he would have been at his peak of retirement when elections are held in six years.

Following nearly three years of his comment of NOT CONTESTING IN 2029, former President Weah has somersaulted, wanting to contest in 2029.
Weah: "From this moment forward, every citizen, every opposition supporter, and every CDC partisan must prepare for the political battle ahead. This is not the time for division. This is not the time for complacency. This is the time for mobilization. This is the time to march forward."

Former President Weah formally declared his candidacy for Liberia's 2029 presidential election in the United States of America.

Weah’s dramatic declaration has instantly electrified the country's political discourse and signaled intense debate within the opposition community, many of whom are also eying the country’s Presidency.


The declaration, delivered Thursday, July 30, 2026, before supporters attending the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) United States Chapter Convention in Philadelphia, removes every lingering doubt about Weah's political ambitions after months of conflicting public interpretations regarding whether the Weah who earlier said he will not contest in 2029, is telling CDCians to get ready for the political battle.

The announcement also provides the clearest indication yet that Liberia's main opposition intends to wage an intense national campaign aimed at reclaiming the Executive Mansion, come 2029.

Speaking with confidence and emotion, Weah framed his decision not merely as a personal political comeback but as what he described as a response to the concerns of millions of Liberians and loyal CDC supporters.


"I speak these words as your political leader. I speak them as your brother, as your servant, and as a man whose heart has never once left this movement," said the global soccer icon turned politician.

He continued: "I say this to you with humility, with resolve, and with the full weight of everything we have built together hand in hand, chapter by chapter, sacrifice by sacrifice."


Weah: "Today, I declare that I will be a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Liberia in 2029. With your support, your blessings, and the mandate of the Congress for Democratic Change, I make this declaration."
Thursday's declaration now settles that debate. Political observers say, the announcement transforms the 2029 election from a distant political discussion into an active national contest, with both the ruling Unity Party and the opposition CDC expected to intensify grassroots mobilization across the country.


Explaining why he decided to return to the presidential race, Weah said, he could not remain silent while, in his view, the achievements of his administration were being dismantled.


"I make this declaration because, I have watched, alongside you, as everything we labored to build has been placed at risk. I refuse to stand on the sidelines while our country is dismantled before our eyes."
He also praised the resilience of CDC supporters, saying, their loyalty demanded determined political leadership.


"I make this declaration because you, the partisans who have never wavered, who have carried this battle through storm after storm, across oceans and across years, deserve a fight that matches your loyalty," he declared.


The former President sought to rally his supporters around a message of unity and perseverance. "Wherever you are, whatever your circumstances, know this: I am with you. I hear you. Together, we will finish what we have started."
However, what critics say could undermine the CDC returning to the Executive Mansion are the divisions within the Party following the 2023 Polls against the current establishment. Another factor that may hamper the CDC 2029 chance has to do the current composition of the political leaders, including Nimba County Representative, Musa Hassan Bility.
But the CDC Political leader assured of building a broad-based opposition coalition ahead of the elections, welcoming members of other political parties who believe the government has fallen short of its 2023 campaign commitments
Seeking to energize party structures at home and abroad, Weah declared that the CDC remained politically formidable despite its 2023 electoral defeat.
"The movement built by the people cannot be destroyed. The movement built on hope cannot be defeated by setbacks. The movement rooted in the hearts and minds of ordinary Liberians cannot be erased."
He proclaimed: "The CDC is alive. The CDC is united. The CDC is organized. The CDC is energized. The CDC is strong. And the CDC is coming back to power."
Calling on supporters to begin preparations immediately, Weah added: "We are gathered not only to celebrate the past but to prepare for the future—to mark the beginning of the next chapter, a chapter of renewal, a chapter of reorganization, and a chapter of victory."

Closing his address, the former President delivered what many supporters described as the convention's defining rallying cry.
"Let the message leave here today. Let it travel across every county, every district, every town, and every village. The mighty CDC is coming back."
He concluded with a message of faith and patriotism: "May God bless the Congress for Democratic Change, and may God bless Liberia."
