China Reaffirms Liberia Strategic Partnership

MONROVIA: China has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Liberia, citing expanding trade, high-level diplomatic exchanges, development cooperation and growing mutual political trust as key pillars of the bilateral relationship.
Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, made the assertion recently at the Chinese Embassy near Monrovia during a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador Chengwu said, China remains committed to working with the Liberian Government, private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to consolidate the gains made in bilateral relations and broaden practical cooperation across multiple sectors.
“As an old Chinese saying goes, ‘No mountain and ocean can distance people with shared aspirations.’ We stand ready to work together with friends from different sectors in Liberia to further advance the China-Liberia Strategic Partnership and deepen practical cooperation in various areas,” Ambassador Chengwu said.
He expressed confidence that continued engagement between the two countries would generate new momentum for bilateral cooperation and produce tangible outcomes for the peoples of Liberia and China.
According to the Chinese envoy, economic and trade relations between the two countries have continued to expand, with bilateral trade in goods reaching a new high during the first eight months of 2026.
He attributed the development partly to China’s full implementation of zero-tariff treatment for Liberian products, saying, bilateral trade recorded a 20.5 percent year-on-year increase during the period.
Ambassador Chengwu also highlighted the successful harvesting of Liberia’s first batch of dried chili peppers intended for export to the Chinese market, describing the development as an important step toward expanding Liberia’s agricultural exports and strengthening trade ties.
He said, China has also continued to support Liberia’s national development priorities under the Government’s ARREST Agenda, emphasizing Beijing’s willingness to align development cooperation with Liberia’s economic and social transformation objectives.
On infrastructure and public-sector development, the Ambassador cited several Chinese-supported projects currently underway or recently completed.
He said, construction of the two overpass bridges along Tubman Boulevard is progressing smoothly, while the National Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Laboratory is nearing completion.
The Chinese-supported Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) building has also been completed and handed over, while the first batch of modern agricultural machinery provided through China’s assistance has arrived in Liberia.
“I am confident that these China-aid projects will inject impetus into Liberia’s development and revitalization, and further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between our two countries,” Ambassador Chengwu said.
The envoy described Liberia as a longstanding friend and partner of China, noting that 2026 has witnessed what he characterized as robust growth and tangible outcomes in the China-Liberia Strategic Partnership under the leadership of Chinese President, Xi Jinping and Liberian President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
According to him, the high-level exchanges between the two governments have maintained positive momentum, while mutual political trust has continued to deepen.
Ambassador Chengwu further welcomed Liberia’s formal signing of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) Convention, describing it as an indication of Liberia’s support for international cooperation in peaceful dispute resolution.
He also commended Liberia for consistently upholding the One-China principle and for providing what he described as strong support to China on multilateral issues.
In return, he said, China has actively supported Liberia in discharging its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, underscoring Beijing’s interest in strengthening coordination with Monrovia within multilateral institutions.
The Ambassador noted that the expanding scope of cooperation demonstrates that China-Liberia relations have moved beyond traditional diplomatic engagement to encompass trade, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, technology and multilateral diplomacy.
Against the backdrop of the anniversary celebration, Ambassador Chengwu also reflected on China’s development trajectory over the past 77 years, crediting the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for what he described as significant improvements in national development and living standards.
He asserted that China has achieved moderate prosperity in all respects and made substantial progress in poverty reduction, social protection and economic development.
He further said China has built the world’s largest middle-income population, comprising more than 400 million people, while establishing basic old-age and medical insurance systems covering more than 1 billion and 1.3 billion people, respectively.
“These achievements have woven the world’s largest social security network,” Ambassador Chengwu said, adding that the Chinese Government continues to prioritize people-centered development.
He disclosed that the CPC launched an education campaign this year aimed at promoting what it considers a correct understanding of governance performance, with party members expected to continue delivering concrete benefits to the Chinese people.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Chengwu expressed appreciation to Liberian officials, diplomats, business leaders, civil society actors and other stakeholders who have contributed to the advancement of China-Liberia relations.
He also extended festive greetings to Chinese nationals and friends of China in Liberia, while reaffirming Beijing’s readiness to work with Monrovia to further consolidate the bilateral strategic partnership and promote mutually beneficial cooperation.
The anniversary reception brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, international partners, business leaders and other stakeholders, providing another platform for reaffirming the longstanding diplomatic ties between Liberia and China.
