MONROVIA: The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has unveiled its official program for activities marking the Union’s 62nd anniversary, with prominent representatives of the World Bank, legal profession and diplomatic community expected to headline the celebrations on today, Wednesday, September 30, 2026 in Monrovia.
The anniversary will be held under the theme: “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development,” highlighting the role of the Liberian media in promoting democratic governance, transparency and national development.
Ms. Georgia Wallen, Country Manager of the World Bank Group in Liberia, will deliver the keynote motivational address during the main indoor program.
Her presentation will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on the challenges and opportunities for strengthening independent media and its contribution to democracy, accountability and sustainable development.
The panel will feature Cllr. Medina Wesseh, Senior Counsel at the International Law Group, and Mr. Lahoucine Rahmouni, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to Liberia.
Representatives of invited government institutions, civil society organizations and academic institutions are also expected to deliver solidarity and complimentary remarks during the ceremony.
The celebrations will commence with a grand parade involving journalists, media and communication practitioners, journalism and mass communication students, as well as members of the public.
Participants will assemble at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill Campus before marching to the Clar Marie Weah Events Hall at the Center for National Documents and Records Agency, commonly known as the National Archives, on 12th Street, Sinkor.
The indoor ceremony will follow the parade at the Clar Marie Weah Events Hall, bringing together media professionals, government officials, development partners, members of the diplomatic community, civil society actors, academics and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, a celebratory reception will subsequently be held at the PUL headquarters on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, to climax the anniversary observances.
Ahead of the anniversary celebrations, the PUL on Monday, September 28, welcomed BBC journalist Jacob Evans, who was accompanied by a delegation from the humanitarian organization Mary’s Meals International.
Evans is in Liberia to produce a documentary as part of activities marking Mary’s Meals’ 20th anniversary in the country.
The visiting delegation included Alex Keay, Director of Partnerships, and Paloma Garcia Ovejero, Head of Media and Editorial.
During the engagement, PUL leadership and staff welcomed the visiting journalist and Mary’s Meals delegation and underscored the important role of journalism and humanitarian organizations in promoting human development and advancing the public good.
The PUL said, the engagement further demonstrates the importance of partnerships between the media, humanitarian organizations and other stakeholders in highlighting issues affecting communities and advancing development.
