MONROVIA: The Liberia Maritime Authority (LIMA) is set to send five Liberian students to China to pursue advanced studies in maritime-related disciplines at the prestigious Shanghai Maritime University.
The scholarship beneficiaries—three males and two females—were selected through an independent and competitive vetting process designed to identify qualified and talented Liberian students with the potential to contribute to the country’s maritime industry.
The five students are expected to depart Liberia on September 9, 2026, to begin their studies at Shanghai Maritime University, one of China’s leading institutions for education and professional training in maritime, shipping and transportation.
According to the Liberia Maritime Authority, the scholarship initiative is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2025 between LiMA and Shanghai Maritime University.
The agreement provides opportunities for qualified Liberian students to pursue university degrees and specialized technical training in various areas of the maritime industry.
The initiative is being viewed as a significant investment in human resource development, particularly at a time when Liberia continues to seek greater professional capacity and expertise to strengthen its maritime sector.
Shanghai Maritime University is internationally recognized for its academic and professional programs in maritime transportation, shipping, logistics and related disciplines. The institution has established itself as a major center for maritime education and training in China and beyond.
Under the leadership of Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe, Sr., the Liberia Maritime Authority has increasingly placed capacity building, professional development and international partnerships at the center of its institutional development agenda.
The latest scholarship initiative, officials say, forms part of that broader strategy to develop a new generation of highly trained Liberian maritime professionals capable of supporting the country’s maritime transformation and advancing its position within the global maritime industry.
LiMA maintains that the benefits of the program will extend beyond the five scholarship recipients. Upon completion of their studies and return to Liberia, the beneficiaries are expected to apply the knowledge, skills and technical expertise acquired in China toward strengthening the institutional and professional capacity of the Liberian maritime sector.
The Authority believes that sustained investment in specialized education and international training will help build a stronger pool of local maritime professionals while reducing the sector’s dependence on external expertise.
The scholarship program, therefore, represents not only an educational opportunity for the five students, but also a long-term investment in Liberia’s maritime future, with the expectation that the beneficiaries will return home equipped to contribute meaningfully to the development, modernization and transformation of the industry.
