MONROVIA: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), but the announcement has been overshadowed by sweeping sanctions against hundreds of candidates implicated in examination malpractice.
The Council disclosed that investigations into alleged examination irregularities led to the cancellation of the subject results of 496 candidates, while the entire results of 105 candidates were nullified after evidence established their involvement in various forms of examination malpractice.
WAEC also revealed that the subject results of 119 candidates and the complete results of 48 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations into suspected violations of examination rules.
According to the Council, the withheld results remain under review and will either be released or subjected to further disciplinary action based on the outcome of the investigations.
The latest sanctions underscore WAEC's determination to preserve the credibility of its examinations and reinforce public confidence in the integrity of the country's educational assessment system.
The Council urged candidates, school authorities, teachers, parents and other stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of honesty and strictly comply with examination regulations, warning that any attempt to compromise the integrity of future examinations will attract severe penalties.
Meanwhile, the release of the provisional results marks another significant milestone in the 2026 academic calendar, even as WAEC intensifies efforts to combat examination fraud and protect the credibility of the Basic Education Certificate Examination across the country.
